gwr northants
Right now I have ya looking lol , why go chasing big numbers ? There's not a lot of cars on here that excite me but steve bonnys is one and steve jolly holly is another , what's people's opinions on a great mix ? To me 380 to 420 max on aWell sorted balanced car , with a good brake set up , suspension , and geo set up , do u really need any more ?? . I honestly don't think u do . Big Shrek
I would say it's more worth while getting the power down rather than bragging about big bhp numbers.before I decided to get another scooby I was set on getting a 6.0v8 monaro with around 400+ bhp but i knew I would get pissed off not being able to use it on the type of b roads I use daily- especially in the winter. No point in having big bhp when you can't use it?It's bragging rights mainly I think
Essbon
Can't really disagree with your thoughts GazIs not always about the numbers, it's all about the torque

Tidgy
decent driver can cope with whatever,,, hahahaall joking aside i had a conversation with andy harvey a few years back, he said the old borrow a track sh!tter clnic had, (stripped, caged, plexigalssed type ra) was alot more fun to drive than his monster race car. he said the high power just makes it harder drive, faster yes, but doesn't mean its more fun. Steve
As Hendo always says a little bit of inside information works wonders or in other words get some driver tuition on track and then see how fast you are

hendo
I've had loads of high powered cars off in a less powered well set up car with good low and mid range torque. Bragging rights and dyno figures are pointless unless:1 you can get the power down when you need it2 it stops when you want it to2 you know how to drive 3 you know how to brake4 its well set up5 you have larger than normal cahoonas
The Gaffer
Hi,one case sticks in my mind,A guy comes along desperate for 450 BHP, I advise against this on a 2.0 ltr explaining its really not about big figures and willy waving, its about spool and how the power is delivered.Nevertheless he goes for an SC46 Billet, we map the car and it makes just over 400 BHP, spool is OK would have been better on an SC42 Billet as they are more suited to 2.0 ltr engines.I test drive the car and its actually better than I thought, spool on the road is good, power is good, overall the car is quiet a nice balanced pack.Customer comes to collect car, smiling away until he sees the graph, face drops, colour changes and he states "that’s no f**king good, I want 450 BHP"......We explained that the engine wont do it for some reason it seems to be struggling, the turbos making boost, timings good, fuelling spot on but it wont make 450 BHP unless we add an even bigger blower and wring its neck.I offer keys to him stating "drive it then tell me its no f**king good", he point blank refused and asked for the next bigger turbo, which was at the time SC50 Billet. We swapped it out, mapped the car again and got him 460 BHP, happy days but.............On the road it was crap, laggy is an understatement, driveability s**te, no power until 5500 RPM and then it was all over, rev limiter clipped, change gear, read a short novel, wait for spool and same again, crap !Back at base customer contacted, arrived with a straight face which soon turned into a big beaming smile when he saw the graph, one happy chappy, one crap car.turns out he was after car park figures to show his mates......We have here 350 BHP cars set up correctly that will, point to point, on the road beat 450 + BHP cars, its all about spool, different kettle of fish for a race car, unless its a tight circuit....CheersKev
hendo
Yes Kev, exactly, it's crazy how folk strive for massive figures and they just have no clue what's best suited for actual driving the thing. Not ruling out the specialist boys at time attack etc who have the dollar for the complete package. Don't mean they're all good drivers though
The Gaffer
Yes Kev, exactly, it's crazy how folk strive for massive figures and they just have no clue what's best suited for actual driving the thing. Not ruling out the specialist boys at time attack etc who have the dollar for the complete package. Don't mean they're all good drivers thoughHi,so very true, all our race cars are built to a very tight budget unlike a lot of time attack cars, its mostly cheque book racing, more power rather than more skill in the cars set up and the drivers ability, there are of course execptions, gobbstopper 2 for example, stunning car, properly set up with a top driver. Not that time attack is racing, it isn’t its a fastest time round a circuit, real racing like Vaughan has just done in an MSA international regulated series, that’s racing, with over 30 more cars battling for a win, time attack, few practice laps, stick your headlights on and everyone moves out of your way so you can do your hot lap, completely the opposite in real racing. But as you state, lots of dollar spent to get more and more powerful engines, yet the VF racing engine is one you can have in your road car affordable too.CheersKev
